I've only just become aware of <A HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_netbooks" REL="nofollow">netbooks</A>. It doesn't look like they've got the kind of screen you said you'd like on an reader, but they are smaller than most laptops, and a lot cheaper, and they're very multi-purpose.
